Designed in the fifties, made from lightweight Duroplast - resin reinforced with cotton or wool - and fitted with an unpretentious two-stroke engine, the Trabant is a true icon of Eastern European engineering. Learn to operate the gear stick built into the dashboard and take a scenic cruise to the hills, where a typically hearty Hungarian meal awaits.

You start out with a short introduction to the Trabant and instruction on how to drive. Two people are assigned to each Trabant. If the group is an odd number, then one Trabant will have three people. After the introductory lesson, the first car, driven by the instructor, will lead the way through Budapest and out to Dobogókő, your destination.

Trabants don't go very fast and they break down quite often, but they can also be fixed quickly. That's why you'll also have a Trabant mechanic on hand to fix any breakdowns - and they do happen.

What is included in the price?

  • An experienced, English-speaking, local Budapest guide who will meet you at your hotel and stay with you for the duration of the tour
  • Transport to and from meeting point (we try to arrange the meeting point as close to your hotel as possible, so you can just walk, but if it's further away we arrange taxis to take you there)
  • Two people per Trabant (in odd numbered groups, one car may have two passengers)
  • 50 kilometre (31 mile) round trip through the Pilis Hills
  • Traditional Hungarian meal in a countryside restaurant
  • Softdrink for those driving back, wine or beer for those who've already driven
  • Support car in case of breakdowns (don't worry, Trabants are easily repaired)

  • Ridiculously low speeds - Trabants were not designed for racing
  • Driving licenses required on the day
  • Please provide the following information for each participant latest one week before arrival:
    • Name
    • Birthplace and date
    • Citizenship
    • Address
    • Passport number
  • If the above information is not provided, then you will not be allowed to drive but can still participate as passengers, for the same price.
  • Larger groups = larger discounts. The more people in your group, the more the price will go down.
  • We are a group holiday tour operator, but would be happy to provide pricing for individuals and couples - the prices will be significantly higher.
  • Drinking and Driving is a no-no! There's a zero tolerance law in Hungary. So make sure to discuss who will not be having a beer or wine with lunch for the drive back.
